PERSONAL APPLICATION

REFLECTION

At the beginning of this year, I doubted that a class could spend an entire semester defining learning and not be absolutely mundane. On the contrary, throughout this course, I have developed my own sense of knowledge and what it means to learn. Every civilization has contributed to the worlds learning in some way or another. With the help and knowledge of these civilizations, I have established my own definition of learning. I believe that learning is the search, acquisition, and/or application of knowledge; whether through experience or by the teachings of others.

Additionally, I have seen this definition of learning alive in my own life. I have begun to define my success in terms of learning, or in terms of my personal growth. In college, I have been taught to apply knowledge from past classes and various subjects to new classes. I have been able to utilize the knowledge that I gained from high school courses to help me get through the grueling general courses that are known for difficulty. I think that if modern civilization used this definition of learning, society would be better. People would focus more on growth and development and novel applications than on "making the grade" or doing work to please authority figures who somehow define success these days. Students would no longer think ill of their humanities or history classes, but would learn from past innovations and would be able to improve their own lives.

It is interesting to apply this knowledge and definition of learning to the family level. Understanding how to learn and what it means to learn is important in families. It is the role of the mother and father to raise children, to teach them how to live righteous lives. Parents can teach their children how to learn, with this definition, and they can teach them to value knowledge through learning. Children should know that learning is very broad. They should know that they must be able to search for knowledge on their own, acquire knowledge, and be able to apply knowledge to various aspects of their lives. They should be able to learn from the past, and from the pasts of others. If children can do this; if children can learn, then their lives will be of worth and their parents will be successful.
